Why is it important?

First empirical treatment about AKP era foreign policy and social identity in Turkey.

Perspectives

In this paper, an original survey of Turkish youth is used to explain the association between nationalistic, ethnic, and religious identities and perceptions of foreign policy in the AKP era Turkey. The author provides an empirical account of such claims as "Middle Easternization" or "Islamization" of Turkish foreign policy. No support is found for these claims at the individual level, but the author finds that social identity matters a great deal in explaining support for foreign policy.
