Narratives or stories of national decline were common in European fascist movements, but their variety and purpose has not been closely studied before. This article looks at various stories of decline that were produced by the Dutch Nazi party, and the uses to which they were put.

Narratives of decline were a cornerstone of fascist understanding of the world, and provide an insight into the workings of fascist ideology that still requires elucidation. Moreover, as such narratives were common beyond fascism, their study highlights the connection between fascist ideology and wider cultural and political phenomena.
