What is it about?

Cranberry is mainly used to prevent urinary infections. However, its antiinflammatory actions is less known. For the first time, our study demonstrated in patiients with metabolic syndrome that cranberry increased adiponectin levels, an important antiinflammatory cytokine and decreased homocysteine, a marker of cardiovascular diseases. The increase in adiponectin levels may be associated with improvement in glucose metabolism verified in some reports.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that low-calorie cranberry juice can decrease some factors implicated in cardiovascular risk without any colateral effect.

Perspectives

I think that this study opens an avenue to be followed on the antiinflammatory role of cranberries in metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
