Why is it important?
For the comparison of radiocarbon results of old samples from different laboratories it is important to include also the different methods which are applied in sample treatment and data handling. Our results indicate the necessity of a more detailed examination of background effects, that is, the measurement of background material, the procedures for correction, and the evaluation of the suitability of background material for a given set of sample materials, in particular for samples close to the limit of the 14C dating method.
