What is it about?
Propaganda for Italian soldiers in occupied Yugoslavia combined themes of Catholic universalism and humanitarianism with Fascist ethno-nationalism that demonised Slavs as the barbaric Other. Despite their apparent contradictions, these themes reflected both the deeper history of Catholic-Fascist relations and the immediate concerns of Italian military commands.

Why is it important?
Analysing content from an underutilised Italian field newspaper, this paper reinforces our growing understanding that propaganda responded both to top-down objectives and bottom-up pressures. The increasing role of Catholic themes in Italian military propaganda anticipated post-Fascist concepts of national identity and civic culture in Italy.
