What is it about?

This is the editorial article by the 3 guest editors (Ana Belén Martínez García, Monika Arnez and Anita Lunic) of a special collection for the journal MMM (Memory, Mind & Media) published by Cambridge University Press. In it we explore dilemmas and challenges, as well as fruitful possibilities of exploring arts-based methods to approach past, present and future of memory in the context of migration.

Why is it important?

We look at the intersections of migration, memory and media studies. Our approach is unique in that we seek to bring together academics from a range of fields (e.g. sociology, narrative studies, ethnography, literature, law, journalism...) but also practicitioners and migrants themselves. Besides, some of the contributors to the collection engage in advocacy and activism, both online and offline, using creative novel metods.

Perspectives

As the main author of this piece as well as the corresponding author and guest editor of the collection, it is an honour to be working in this collection. I draw mostly from witnessing practices and lifewriting scholarship as my framework to look at testimonies. I believe in the ower of the "I" and the "we" to raise awareness of current issues, in this case migration. Listening to life stories, reading about them, collaborating and co-creating with them, is the way forward.
