What is it about?
The shift from majoritarian to proportional electoral systems in Western Europe is an important area of research in electoral studies. Existing explanations, however, do not travel well to other regions of the world where party competition was nonexistent or highly limited. This article provides the first comparative account of the adoption of proportional representation in Latin America, showing how it challenges as well as complements theories built on the assumption that this reform always takes place in contexts of increasing party competition.
