What is it about?

Little is known of the perspectives of young Pacific people who live in NZ and who smoke in relation to how they access quit smoking support - we were interested if the online advertising used in social media and the online environment could play a role. We held focus groups to identify what these young people felt was important on this issue.

Why is it important?

Pacific youth in NZ have high rates of smoking and are high users of social media. This is the first study to investigate their use of social media and how they perceive this mode of communication could work for them to convey support messages or link them to services for quitting.

Perspectives

A small exploratory study - highlighted that much more needs to be done to understand the potential of social media for reaching out to this population group, and to measure its effect.
