What is it about?

The article highlight the reasons why San learners drop out of school. The norm has been that it was the teachers who gave reasons why the learners drop out of school and in most cases the reasons were biased. This article got the information from the dropouts by following them in their settlement areas. The reasons advanced were: English being too difficult, poor hostel conditions, cultural misfit, marriage, corporal punishment amongst other reasons.

Why is it important?

The reasons advanced by drop outs cannot be ignored. They speak volumes about the curriculum we offer and therefore needs the educational authorities to rethink the way we structure our curriculum for the benefit of all.

Perspectives

We cannot educate learners who drop out of school. We have to retain them in school. Education is for all and not for some. The reasons advanced by the drop outs are sound and consider a reflection on the way educational authorities do things - do we understand the children we teach? what is it that they can eat or not eat? What would be the best remedy for all their problems? Of course there is no problem without a solution.
