What is it about?

This paper reported and did in-depth analysis on a peculiar vortical structure in the wake of a prolate spheroid with relatively high attack angle.

Why is it important?

The self-similarity law for axisymmetric wakes has for the first time been examined and verified in a complex helical vortex in the far part of an asymmetric wake by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS). A new vortex alteration scenario is detected (helical symmetry transformation without flow reversal along vortex axis) and analysed in this paper.
