Why is it important?

Our work on stratified turbulent clouds has brought the role of internal gravity waves in stratified turbulence back into the picture. In recent years the tendency has been to focus on classical turbulence cascade approaches to stratified turbulence which tended to ignore the role of waves and their interaction with the potential vorticity of the flow. In this paper we show that internal gravity waves are responsible for creating coherent pancake structures in a turbulent cloud.
