What is it about?
Clostridium difficile commonly causes healthcare associated diarrhea. We have shown that 10% of nursing home residents colonized this pathogen and a further 7.3% had acquired it over a median follow up period of 29 weeks. The presence of nasogastric tube was an independent risk factor for C. difficile colonization.

Why is it important?
Our findings confirmed the contribution of nursing home residents to Clostridium difficile transmission across the continuum of care since the commonest ribotype 002 found in this study was also the commonest type isolated in hospitals. The need of an infection control program in long-term care is highlighted.
