What is it about?
the conditions necessary to yield broad spectral coverage with a sufficiently high resolution, strong rejection of hard X-ray backgrounds, and negligible source broadening for extended sources are formulated

Why is it important?
Opacity is important for terrestrial plasmas for inertially and magnetically confined fusion programs. The theoretical and experimental study of the X-ray absorption characteristics of these plasmas is an active field of research with many applications in inertial confinement fusion and X-ray laser production. As a result, accurate X-ray absorption spectroscopy data are essential to validate theoretical models and plasma diagnostics over a broad range of temperatures and densities.
