What is it about?

Since discovery of the presence of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in adipose tissue in 2001, we have seen growing interests in this cell type worldwide, partly due to their abundance and alternative source for bone marrow derived MSCs that is proven clinically useful. This comprehensive review summarises all the registered clinical trials using stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells or adipose-derived MSCs. In addition, we discuss current clinical potentials and challenges of the ASC application.

Why is it important?

There have been an increasing number of published papers and clinical cases using adipose stem cells (ADSC/ASC), but very few articles have comprehensively summarised their clinical applications, especially clinical trials. In this review, we describe the current progress of ASCs in clinical-grade production, regulatory environment, and clinical applications, with primary focus on ongoing clinical trials in the world.
