What is it about?

Analysis of the scope of existing Free Trade Agreements worldwide encompassing a chapter on services trade in 2016 and of their general compatibility with WTO law. More in-depth analysis of the economic rationale behind South-South preferential services trade and of the scope of flexibility for it in the GATS. Building on a model of "ideal South-South services trade", assessing the existing services trade agreements between developing countries in detail. Concluding that some countries, particularly in Latin America, indeed use the scope of flexibility offered in the GATS, which appears to have an overall positive effect on sustainable economic development.

Why is it important?

Preferential Trade Agreements or Free Trade Agreements are more and more important, particularly in times when the WTO is in crises. Trade in services on the other hand, is critical for sustainable economic development and its role in the creation of value chains and of value add production in developing countries should not be underestimated. Learning about the ideal regulatory framework therefore merits a closer look.

Perspectives

A comprehensive study of over 298 free trade agreements, their relationship with WTO law and their potential of creating a regulatory framework which is beneficial to sustainable economic growth in developing countries - thanks to the direction global trade policy has taken in recent years, the book has become more relevant than it was at the time of writing.
