What is it about?

Chapter 9 provides an evaluation of the real world experience in the use of high speed marine craft in naval missions. This chapter specifically examines amphibious warfare missions where air cushion craft are currently in use. Ongoing developments in improvements in design are discussed with many examples of operational use. The particular topic of how to integrate stealth into high speed marine craft is analysed in this chapter.

Why is it important?

In too many examples in navy history the fragility of new craft designs has hampered the acceptability of high speed marine craft when subjected to the realities of wartime use under rigorous missions. This chapter has concentrated on relating craft design's high technology design with the rigors of wartime use to aid future designers of craft intended to go into harm's way.

Perspectives

Using the many examples of early failed attempts to use high technology designs into naval use and their cancellation by the navy provides a perspective on what future designs need to encompass, is the perspective used in this chapter.
