What is it about?

Chapter 7 develops the relationships between the technical design characteristics for high performance and the design requirements for economic benefit. This chapter begins with the requirements for economic efficiency to lower the direct operating costs of any vehicle and develops the cost estimating relationships for marine craft. An extensive data base of cost data is provided to guide future cost-benefit analyses of such craft.

Why is it important?

All too often in technical design literature on craft of all types, design rules are developed without consideration for the costs of such designs. In the high speed marine craft industry this has led to many such marine craft programs in the navies of the world and in commercial operations to be canceled because the craft were found to be not cost-effective. This chapter outlines the design rules such that future designs can be cost-effective by proper integration of technical and cost parameters.

Perspectives

The author has working experience in both the shipbuilding and the aerospace communities in high speed ship programs and provides this perspective in the design and construction of such unique craft that must call on both cultures for successful design.
