What is it about?

After the initial efforts by the US Maritime Administration (Chapter 4), the US Navy continued the efforts with a major development program to develop a frigate sized ship capable of conducting military missions at one hundred knots at sea. Chapter 5 provides a chronological history of all the major efforts toward that goal. It includes the events of the test craft stage where one test craft demonstrated a world speed record of over ninety knots and successfully met all the contract requirements for the program. The chapter concludes with preliminary designs for the planned next stage for large tonnage ships based on that successful test craft program.

Why is it important?

There were both technical and programmatic difficulties experienced on the program and these are summarized in this chapter that serve as important data points for detailed treatment in later chapters of the book.

Perspectives

As the Technical Director and Program Manager of the successful test craft, the author provides a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of designing and building such a unique ship.
