What is it about?

Compliant structures provide new space to design aircraft structures. Using the compliant structure and the active actuation, the shape of the aircraft can be changed to increase the performance. The paper explains investigation of the proper way to achieve the unsymmetrical stiffness by optimising the corrugated panels in the structure.

Why is it important?

We built an equivalent model of the corrugated panel to reduce the computation time of the optimisation. And experiments have been done to validate the concept. A comprehensive study considering the aircraft performance is also undertaken to highlight the importance of the optimisation.

Perspectives

I hope the article could help the understanding the design of compliant structures. The compliant structure might be the candidates of future aircraft. I hope the work on the system level study could answer the question on whether it is worth to adopt the morphing aircraft technology to some extent.
