What is it about?
What are the factors that influence winegrowers' decision-making about biodiversity in Chile? We compared winegrowers involved in a sustainability program with a comparison group to determine predictors of conservation practice adoption in vineyards. This study demonstrates the multidimensional nature of winegrowers’ motivations and barriers for adopting conservation practices, which is critical to promote sustainable agricultural systems in a highly threatened region.

Why is it important?
The conservation of endangered Chilean Mediterranean ecosystems, which are extremely underrepresented in the National System of Protected Areas, currently depends on farmers and private landholders. Thus, understanding the underlying drivers of program effectiveness, which rest upon decisions made by participating individuals, is critical to addressing the significant challenges facing biodiversity conservation in this region.
Perspectives
I really hope this article helps us to promote and strengthen partnerships with the agricultural industry for conservation in Chile, as well as to make conservation efforts more effective. Based on the results, the co-authors and I have been able to improve the design of the Wine, Climate Change and Biodiversity Program. I also hope this article inspires others to do relevant science and boosts the development of the Human Dimensions of Wildlife Conservation's field in Latin America.
