What is it about?
Cabbage aphids are cosmopolitan pests and cause significant damage to crops of plants in the Brassicaceae family such cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. This study evaluated the influence of leaf position, precipitation, temperature, and parasitism on populations of Brevicoryne brassicae, Lipaphis pseudobrassicae, and Myzus persicae (Aphididae) in collard greens fields in the Brazil.

Why is it important?
This kind of experimental study is scarce on tropical Areas. A total of 469,795 cabbage aphids were counted during the 101 sampling sessions. Therefore the data behind the complex models obtained are robust. Our results show that both abiotic variables (temperature, and rainfall) and biotic variables like parasitism level control cabbage aphids’ populations
Perspectives
Greater knowledge of Brassica aphids’ biology under field conditions, in particular on tropical areas, is essential for the application in the future of biological control strategies. Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations.
