What is it about?

The paper describes an analytical method used to measure the inorganic and organic C-14 in CANUD SIERs as well as an evaluation of C14 released in alkaline conditions, relevant for disposal in cementitious environment.

Why is it important?

C14 is an important contributor to the dose due to the waste disposal. Inorganic and organic C14 has different behavior in geosphere and consequently for Safety Assessment of a disposal system it is important to be known not only the total C14 but also its form (i.e. its partitioning between inorganic and organic species)
