What is it about?

This article shows a new solution for simple flow models that include multiple effects that uses the quadratic formula.

Why is it important?

This solution is guaranteed to give the correct answer that satisfies the simplified version of the governing equations with multiple effects present. Moreover, the solution can be solved by hand using a quadratic equation. This makes the solution fast as compared to the usual guess-and-check methods.

Perspectives

This publication, in my opinion, makes solving the quasi-one-dimensional compressible flow problems significantly easier. Most solutions only incorporate a single effect and may, or may not, have a pen-and-paper solution. This work incorporates the three most common effects: area change, friction, and heat transfer. Then the paper presents a pen-and-paper solution to all three effects simultaneously which is very useful. Engineers in industry now have a simple solution for various kinds of problems that they didn't have before without resorting to guess-and-check methods. Students now have a way to explore more general problems beyond what is shown in the typical textbooks to help improve their understanding of the underlying physics in these problems, which they can take into future classes or jobs.
