What is it about?

Lagenaria siceraria or bottle gourd is a medicinal herb. It is also called Calabash. In the present work, we explored the phenolic and flavonoid contents, and antioxidant potential of two part of the fruit using a number of assays.

Why is it important?

It was an effort to understand the antioxidant properties of this common fruit vegetable. Many assays have been used for the purpose in order to have an as much complete picture as possible.

Perspectives

Fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidants. Lagenaria siceraria is a common vegetable consumed in many parts of the world. It is cardiotonic, liver tonic, anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic, mentioning only a few. Phenolics and flavonoids are known for their antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties. Another of other assays were also performed to explore antioxidant activities of the mesocarp and epicarp of the fruit.
