What is it about?
Systemic injection of adenoviral vectors for gene therapy leads to an acute, dose-related thrombocytopenia with an increased risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation at high doses. Although this effect was observed several years ago and repetitively reported both in animal models and human patients, its causes are unknown. Authors observed interaction between Ad vectors and platelets both in vitro when human platelets are exposed to Ad vectors and in vivo after intravenous delivery into mice.
