What is it about?

This paper presents a model of molecular evolution that is episodic enough to agree with the theory of punctuated equilibrium. While that theory was motivated by the fossil record, the model of molecular evolution was motivated by DNA sequence data.

Why is it important?

The proposed fractional-difference model of molecular evolution is based on a mathematical device called a shift operator.
