What is it about?

A scheme for quantum computing gates is proposed. A trapped ion confined in a cavity interacts with the quantum vacuum field as well as with a classical laser field. We demostrate that it is possible to build a CNOT quantum gate.

Why is it important?

We propose an alternative scheme for quantum gates using trapped ions. One of the advatages is that it suffices the cavity to be cooled down to T = 0K (vacuum state). This minimizes the unwanted effects of decoherence.
