What is it about?

This paper introduces the concept on transformation diagrams which are developed from the principles of thermodynamics. Non-equilibrium transformation from one phase to another occurs at compositions of the transformed phase close to the parent phase. the free energy change for such transformations is calculated and the limits of compositions within which these transformations can occur are predicted.

Why is it important?

These diagrams can successfully model non-equilibrium transformations in alloy systems such as liquid-solid or solid-solid transformations. It has been applied to many systems and the predictions are more consistent with experimental observations compared to the conventional modelling practices for such non-equilibrium transformations.
