What is it about?

We cloned and sequenced Paramecium gene fragments encoding the following components participating in endosome formation, sorting and maturation of the proprotein precursors: dynamin 2, Rab7 and furin.

Why is it important?

There is a proof that all these genes are expressed in this unicellular organism and share a considerable homology with their mammalian counterparts

Perspectives

We showed evolutionary conservancy of the endocytic and trafficking machinery in the unicellular eukaryote Paramecium. In Metazoa, endocytosis is a source of nutrients, hormones, growth factors, antibodies, lipoproteins and pathogenic substances.Endocytic pathway may be utilized in biology and medicine as a non-destructive delivery of macromolecules such as antibodies, enzymes and genes into living cells. On the other hand, disturbances in this pathway and/or its components may lead to severe human malfunctions.
