What is it about?

We have developed a free mobile app for iOS called Open Drug Discovery Teams (ODDT) that uses social media to enable collaboration and sharing of information around rare and neglected diseases including molecule structures and biological data. This work was presented as a poster at the major Lysosomal storage diseases meeting in 2013.

Why is it important?

ODDT https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/open-drug-discovery-teams/id517000016?mt=8 is open to participation from anyone and provides the ability for users to make annotations and assertions, contributing to the collective value of the data. The app is based upon the Twitter API and uses Google Alerts RSS feeds as a useful proof of concept for a real time source of publicly generated content.

Perspectives

This was an early example to show how we could capture information on this rare disease with an app as an aggregator of data.
