What is it about?
This report reveals that the genes Btg1 and Tis21/Btg2 are required in the growth of the cerebellum, with different roles. Without these genes, there is an abnormal cerebellum with impaired motor coordination.

Why is it important?
The development of the cerebellum is of key importance not only for motor coordination but also for memory and emotion. Additionally, Tis21/Btg2 is a suppressor of medulloblastoma, tumor of the cerebellum that develops in children, and also Btg1 may have a part. Thus, these genes are essential to prevent the pathological development of the cerebellum.

This report is important because it brings to light unknown aspects of brain development, thanks to a complex molecular and in vivo strategy
