Distinguishing between eye movements

What is it about?

It is often difficult to decide whether or not the eye is steadily fixating a point in a scene. Yet it is an important issue in understanding vision. This work uses automatic statistical methods to classify fixations without making assumptions about eye movement parameters or requiring expert judgment. Free software for classification is available from the authors.

Why is it important?

There is no standard method for classifying eye fixations, nor are there commonly accepted reference values for eye speed, acceleration, duration, and stability. Different algorithms and movement parameters can lead to systematic differences in the interpretation of gaze data. By contrast, in this work, classification proceeds automatically, in a nonparametric way.
