What is it about?

We describe in detail the method we used to assess ocular convergence and accommodation to all combinations of the three main cues that a target is approaching in space (blur, disparity and proximal/looming). All eight possible cue combinations were presented under otherwise identical conditions. Any cue that contained disparity drove much better responses for both convergence and accommodation than any cue that did not.

Why is it important?

This paper described details of the method we have used with only minor adaptations for most of our subsequent studies. Binocular disparity proved to be the main cue for both convergence and accommodation in typical young adults and older children.
