What is it about?
In recent years a number of transnational municipal climate networks have emerged. We wanted to find out what happens to local climate governance in cities if they join such a network. We found that staff in cities use these networks a lot in internal political processes in the cities.

Why is it important?
Our results go against the dominant academic understanding of these networks. Previously, it was believed that local climate governance benefits from membership in these networks through processes like international exchange such as learning from best practice examples. Internal political processes were mostly ignored by the scientific literature. But these results are also important for networks and cities as they show how membership in a network can be used most efficiently.
