What is it about?

We developed questions for measuring attitudes and beliefs about critical thinking, and then tested these with Psychology students. By analysing how they responded, suitable questions were identified and formed into a questionnaire. We also asked the students to take other tests and matched their university grades to their questionnaire answers. This showed that students with positive beliefs about critical thinking were more likely to perform better on their course, and score more highly on other tests.

Why is it important?

The questionnaire that we developed is easy to administer and scores. In addition, scores on the questionnaire were shown to predict performance at university. This makes it a useful tool for research and encouraging self-reflection when teaching.
