What is it about?
Frictional properties of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as an anticipative material for cartilage replacement were examined in a pendulum hip simulator. The use of PVA inserts articulating with ceramic femoral head caused outstanding reduction in friction coefficient compared to commercial hip pairs.

Why is it important?
Actual low frictional behaviors were observed for total hip replacement model with hydrogel layer against ceramic femoral head in a pendulum hip simulator.
