What is it about?
Drs Maus and Nauen of Bayer CropScience contested the irreversible nature of receptor binding by imidacloprid in insects. However, they did not retract previous assertions made by their colleagues Abbink (1991), Mencke and Hansen (1999). The latter paper [Parasitol Res (1999) 85: 625-637] clearly states that “the irreversible blocking [by imidacloprid] of the nACh receptors leads to a lethal hyperactivity of the nerves and muscles of the insect.”

Why is it important?
It demonstrates that Bayer CropScience ditched a mechanism of action they had previously described in great detail, and confirmed by Tennekes, to prevent unfavorable regulatory action.
