What is it about?

In this work, we have utilized graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which is a carbon-based nanomaterial which responds optically when bilirubin is in contact with it. bilirubin is an critical biomarker for detecting liver related diseases. To develop a simple and compact platform for bilirubin detection, we have 3D printed a platform which incorporates small paper devices only functionalized with GQDs and also a smartphone to click images of the reaction between GQDs and bilirubin. Based on change in the colour emission of GQDs due to bilirubin, smartphone application quantifies the bilirubin concentration

Why is it important?

This platform can perform the task of determining bilirubin concentration in a simpler, cost-effective and rapid way, where conventionally it is done in labs. It is a very innovative way of bringing rapid prototyping technique like 3D printing, paper microfluidic devices and smartphone into a platform to build something so compact and easy to use for detecting a very critical biomarker such as bilirubin.

Perspectives

This work was really fun it has the perfect blend of science and technology which was made possible due to people working in different areas and coordination.
