What is it about?

This is to discover new natural antimicrobial agents for the treatment of infections. The plant Ehretia serrata is a tree. In the present study, its leaves were investigated for antimicrobial activity against a number of microbes.

Why is it important?

The current antibiotic drugs are losing efficacy because of drug resistance developed in microorganisms. Thus, new medicines are required. Plant-based medicines are expected to be not only effective and safe, they should in most cases also be cost-effective and affordable for common people in many parts of the world.

Perspectives

Pathogens soon develop resistance to existing antimicrobial drugs rendering them ineffective. This necessitates efforts to discover new counterparts. The present study is an effort to find new antibiotic drugs from a plant called Ehretia serrata. The results were promising and encouraging.
