What is it about?

The protist Tetrahymena thermophila is an interesting model organism with some unique features; it also shows the largest phylogenetic distance to all of the eukaryotes studied to date. Here it is introduced as a versatile meiotic model system, which will contribute to our understanding of the conservation and diversification of meiotic recombination processes.
