What is it about?

Mushroom is a crop product that is accepted and consumed worldwide. Mushroom possesses an antioxidant property that helps to reduce oxidative damage in human body and provides protection against diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, the current production rate of mushroom is about 24 tonnes/day, which is only sufficient to supply to the local consumers instead of exporting to other countries. This study was performed to apply the biochar as bio-fertilizer in mushroom cultivation and investigate its potential to increase the mycelium growth rate and mushroom yield.

Why is it important?

The biochar was carbon-dense with high surface area and pore volume, which provided many adsorption sites for water and nutrients required for mushroom cultivation. The addition of biochar as bio-fertilizer was found to have promoted the growth of mycelium and increased the yield of Oyster mushroom compared to that shown by conventional mushroom cultivation method.
