What is it about?

Literature on this subject has been reviewed and all postmortem data was collected in a table. To assess to what extent a measure has been investigated, a check list was made. Further, to assess if a measure (marker) can be used as evidence in court, all markers were screened using criteria used in the US.

Why is it important?

These so-called postmortem biochemical markers have been studied vastly throughout the years, but an assessment from a practical point of view had lacked. Here, we tried to show that most of these markers need to be investigated more thoroughly and that none of these markers meets the requirements to be used in court as evidence

Perspectives

With this work, we hope that the research done in the field also will focus on the practical aspect, i.e. are these markers reliable enough to be ever used as actual measures for the time since death
