What is it about?
We use ‘big data’ sources to count and describe digital businesses in the UK. We develop a novel ‘sector-product’ approach and text mining to analyse key cells. We compare sector-product company estimates against those derived from SIC codes. Our counts are 42% higher than SIC-based estimates, with almost 70,000 more ICT companies. We reflect on the broader pros and cons of frontier data use.
