What is it about?
The dynamic expression of phase II genes is regulated by the transcriptional regulatory element called antioxidant response element (ARE). Many transcription factors interact with these AREs to orchestrate the expression of an array of cytoprotective genes in a spatio-temporal manner. Cells are constantly exposed to various kinds of stressors: chemical, environmental, oxidative, radiation, etc.

Why is it important?
This review describes the discovery of the AREs, classes of ARE enhancers, computational identifitication and analysis of AREs, transcription factors that act on the AREs, and applications of AREs.
