Why is it important?

Once we get old, we have a higher chance of loss our visual function. In may cases, this is because the light-detecting neuroretina is sick. Examples of age-related retinal disease include age-related macular degeneration, glaucomatous retinopathy, and diabetic retinopathy. It is important for us to understand how the retina responds to aging insults and why old age put the retina at risk of developing these sight-threatening diseases.
