What is it about?

This publication is a study of what factors control the rate of formation of poly(acrylic acid), a highly important water-soluble polymer.

Why is it important?

We used quantum chemical methods to model how quickly poly(acrylic acid) chains grow, and how they respond to different conditions of solvency. We demonstrated that the high reaction rate in water is due to a significant reduction in the activation energy - which has implications for the synthesis of water-soluble polymers.
