What is it about?

This publication summarizes what is currently known about global biodiversity, explains why we need it, describes the major threats to it, and outlines what we need to do to protect it. It ends with a plea for post-pandemic ambition at the crucial 2021 meetings of the CBD and UNFCCC.

Why is it important?

After the COVID-19 pandemic, we have two chances to set the world on a new track: the COP15 meeting of the Convention on Biodiversity, CBD, in Kunming, China, and the COP26 meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, in Glasgow, Scotland. This paper was written as background to these.

Perspectives

This is an invited paper and I was given the title, which made it fun to write!
