What is it about?
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global trade of medical devices has received a lot of attention. To ensure a steady domestic supply of these devices, some countries have pursued international trade cooperation, while others have imposed export restrictions. These actions have increased instability and uncertainty in the global medical device market. It’s important for government policymakers to identify the most influential countries in this trade and take preventive measures regarding exports. To address this problem, this study creates a global medical device trade network (GMDTN) and analyzes the influence of various countries from a network-based perspective.

Why is it important?
The study reveals the patterns of influence and geographical distribution of countries within this network. It explains how certain countries have gained strong influence and shows that the global medical device market is driven by exports, and the U.S. has a dominant position in terms of both the number of trading partners. Moreover, some countries serve as critical intermediaries in the formation of other countries’ influence, even if they are not directly significant trading partners themselves.
Perspectives
The findings provide useful insights for policymakers to understand the influence of different countries in the global medical device trade and to prepare for potential disruptions in the market.
