What is it about?
This study assesses the environmental impact of different hydrogen production technologies, which are essential for decarbonizing energy, transport, and chemical sectors. The research identifies and compares the most promising solutions based on their short, medium, and long-term benefits. The study reviews nine process configurations based on four different technologies, including steam methane reforming, and electrolysis, and quantifies their environmental impact using life cycle assessment. The recommendations for sustainable energy solutions vary based on regional differences and future advances in supply chains. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the development of more environmentally-friendly hydrogen production technologies for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Why is it important?
The development and use of hydrogen as a clean and renewable energy source is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change. However, different hydrogen production technologies have varying environmental impacts, and it is essential to assess and compare them to identify the most sustainable and efficient solutions. This study provides valuable insights into the environmental impact of different hydrogen production technologies and identifies the most promising solutions for a sustainable energy transition. The findings of this study could help policymakers and industry leaders make informed decisions regarding hydrogen production and use, ultimately contributing to the development of a more sustainable and cleaner future.
