Specialization of the left supramarginal gyrus for hand-independent praxis representation is not related to hand dominance

What is it about?

We assessed laterality of skilled actions (praxis) with fMRI in left-handed individuals, and then compared it with right-handers.

Why is it important?

We found left-lateralized activity in the inferior parietal lobule (the supramarginal gyrus), regardless of the hand used or hand preference. Left-handers did exhibit a less asymmetric functional architecture for praxis representation in frontal and prefrontal regions. This study shows that higher-order praxis representation and low level motor dominance rely on dissociable mechanisms.
